We have enjoyed our first BBQ last week end in Galway and we used our first of new salads from organic garden located at the rear of our guest house accommodation.

Situated on the west coast of Ireland by the Atlantic Ocean, Galway has long been considered a centre of cultural excellence. Galway is a vibrant university city with its city centre, a labyrinth of winding medieval streets, squares and waterways. With a population of 75,000 Galway sits on the edge of the River Corrib surrounded by Galway Bay facing the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean.

Galway Arts Festival is Ireland’s largest international arts festival. Founded in 1978 it has grown into an event with a significant reputation where, in 2010, there were 158,000 attendances at 273 performances, talks and exhibitions in 25 venues over 14 days. The Festival showcases a wide variety of international artists alongside the best of Irish talent and includes music (popular, contemporary, jazz, world, classical and traditional), theatre (indoor and outdoor), visual arts, dance, talks, discussions, family events and comedy in its programme.

The Festival has consolidated its reputation nationally and internationally and continues to develop its profile through the international media and attracts 27% of its audience from abroad. It has developed a profile within the ‘festival world’ where it now is viewed as operating on an international circuit, with a reputation equal to that of much larger international festivals.

The Festival has contributed hugely to placing Galway firmly on the map as both a key cultural centre for the arts and cultural tourism destination. In addition the Festival has founded and acted as a seedbed for a number of well known and established arts organisations in Galway.

Highlights from the programme from 2008-2010 included, Primal Scream, Philip Glass, New York Dolls, David Gray, David Byrne, Brad Mehldau, Blondie, Rich Hall, Kronos Quartet, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Bon Iver, David Hockney, Joni Mitchell, Henri Matisse, Tommy Tiernan, Spike Jonze and Reginald D Hunter amongst others. Visiting international theatre and dance companies have included John Mahoney and Northlight Theatre, The Royal National Theatre, The Royal Court, Steppenwolf, Michael Clark Dance Company, Hofesh Shechter Dance Company, The Abbey Theatre, Druid Theatre Company and the Bristol Old Vic and the Festival also present traditional music concerts in large-scale and intimate settings, and large scale street spectacle from Royal de Luxe to the annual Macnas Festival Parade.

Havana Cultura in Galway 03 – 05 June 2011

Havana Cultura (formerly Little Havana Festival) returns to Galway’s Latin Quarter over the June Bank Holiday weekend, 3rd-5th June.

From the evening of Friday, 3rd June through to the Sunday, Galway’s Latin Quarter will be alive with Latin music, dance, street entertainment, art and cultural events. Over 60 free events will be taking place over the weekend, courtesy of Havana Club, the Authentic Cuban Rum.

Returning to the Havana Cultura stage this year are the legendary Cuban All Stars, the eclectic Sabor Cubano and the Cuban Jazz Project. International performers La Tinto Bros., local heroes the Disconauts and Galway’s very own eight-piece salsa band Cuba Libre, will also feature. Groovalizacion DJs will bring their vibes, grooves and cultural fusions to the Latin Quarter, with a host of other bands and DJs from around the world, ensuring the pulse of Havana is felt throughout the ci

Our garden produces the most fantastic flavoured Potatoes, Cabbage, Mango tout, peas, lettuce and a wide variety of herbs from which we achieve two crops per year. We use our raised bed to rotate the variety of vegetables from bed to bed every year. If you are walking through the garden please pick some lavender and the beautiful smell will linger with you all day.

Enjoy our flower and vegetable gardens and relax in our patio with any one of our many coffee specialty drinks or our Galway made organic herbal teas with a biscuit of your choice…all complementary from Padraic & Grainne.
